Tennessee school holidays

Tennessee runs one of the earliest school years in the country. Memphis-Shelby County Schools goes back on August 3, 2026, Knox County Schools on August 10 and Metro Nashville Public Schools on August 11. The trade is an early finish: Memphis-Shelby is out on May 20, 2027, Metro Nashville on May 25 and Knox County on May 26. Tennessee families get their summer a fortnight before most of the Northeast even breaks up.

The state sets a 180-day instructional requirement and leaves the shape of the year to districts, which is why all three build in a full week of fall break rather than the scattered teacher days you see elsewhere in the South.

Fall break is a real holiday in Tennessee, not a long weekend. Knox County goes first, October 5 to 9, 2026. Memphis-Shelby takes the longest, October 12 to 19, and Metro Nashville takes October 12 to 16, with an additional professional development day on October 9 that gives Nashville families a four-day weekend the week before.

Thanksgiving splits the state. Memphis-Shelby and Metro Nashville both close for the full week, November 23 to 27, 2026. Knox County takes only November 25 to 27. If you are in Knoxville, the Monday and Tuesday are school days while the rest of the state is already away.

Winter break starts on December 21, 2026 everywhere. Metro Nashville and Knox County run to January 1, with Nashville adding a professional development day on January 4 and Knox students not back until January 5. Memphis-Shelby runs its break through January 4.

Spring break lands in three different weeks, which is the most useful fact on this page. Knox County takes March 8 to 12, 2027. Memphis-Shelby takes March 15 to 19 and then adds a second break, March 26 to 29, around Good Friday. Metro Nashville takes March 22 to 26. Knox County is also closed on March 26 and 29.

Three metros breaking in three separate March weeks means Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Dollywood absorb waves of visitors rather than one surge. The week of March 22 is the heaviest, because Nashville is off and Memphis is either side of it.

The early May finish is the real advantage. Tennessee families can be at the coast or in the Smokies in the last week of May while most of the country is still at school, at prices that have not yet moved to peak summer rates.

One caution on Memphis: the published 2026-27 calendar was still pending state approval when we checked it, so confirm those dates on the district site before booking anything non-refundable.
