Our editorial standards

How we research, draft, review, and update every attraction page, category guide, and FAQ on Day Out With The Kids USA. Our commitment to accuracy and transparency guides everything we publish.

Our mission

Day Out With The Kids USA is the US edition of Day Out With The Kids, the UK's largest family days out directory. We exist to help American parents and caregivers find theme parks, museums, zoos, aquariums, water parks, and other places worth a family trip, with honest information about what to expect when you get there.

Every page on this site is published with one question in mind: would this help a parent decide whether to take their family today? If it would not, we cut it.

Accuracy first

We cross-check facts against at least two primary sources before we publish.

Family relevance

Every page is written to help a parent decide whether to take their family today.

Transparent process

Every page carries a named byline, a date, and a clear AI disclosure, and says whether a person reviewed it individually.

Open to correction

If we got something wrong, we want to know, and we update the page quickly.

Who writes and edits

Our content is overseen by a named editor, supported by research and drafting tools. How much individual editorial attention a page receives depends on what kind of page it is, and we think you should know which is which.

Attraction pages are individually reviewed. An editor checks the facts against sources and rewrites anything that reads generic or inaccurate before the page goes live.

Category and location pages, pages such as "theme parks in California", are generated from the attraction data underneath them. Editors review and approve the structure and wording patterns these pages use, and the underlying attraction data, rather than reading every page individually. There are several hundred of them.

School holiday calendars are built from published school district calendars. The dates are checked against district sources. The surrounding explanatory text is generated from that verified data and reviewed by category rather than page by page.

Editors are responsible for accuracy, tone, and family relevance across all of it, and have final say on what gets published and what gets pulled.

How a page is made

1

Brief

An editor scopes the attraction or topic, the audience, and the questions a parent would ask before visiting.

2

Research

We pull facts from the operator's own website, official tourism boards, and other primary sources.

3

Draft

A first draft is produced, often with AI assistance to structure summaries, categories, and FAQs at scale.

4

Human review

A named editor reviews every attraction page before it goes live, checks facts against sources, and rewrites anything that reads generic, inaccurate, or off-brand. Category, location, and school holiday pages are reviewed by pattern and by the data underneath them.

5

Publish

The page goes live with a byline, a date, and a way to flag issues.

6

Refresh

Pages are revisited on a rolling schedule and whenever a reader flags an issue.

How we use AI

"AI helps us cover more places. Humans make sure the result is accurate, useful, and family-relevant."

We use AI tools to help draft and structure attraction summaries, category guides, and FAQs at scale. We are transparent about this because the alternative, pretending entirely AI-drafted content is fully human-written, is dishonest and bad practice. The byline on every page reads "AI-assisted, human-edited" so you always know what you are reading.

What AI does not do on this site:

  • It does not publish attraction pages without a human editor reviewing them first.
  • It does not invent prices, opening hours, ages, or accessibility details. These come from the attraction's own published information, and where we do not have a figure we say so rather than estimating.
  • It does not write reviews or scores for attractions on our behalf.
  • It does not decide rankings. Where we order a list, that reflects an editor's stated criteria.

Sourcing and fact-checking

For factual claims such as opening hours, ticket prices, age recommendations, and accessibility details, our editors cross-check at least two primary sources. Normally that is the attraction's own website plus an official tourism board or operator listing. We note the date of the check on the page.

Information about attractions changes without notice. We treat the operator's own website as the source of truth on the day of your visit, and we say so on every page.

Ratings, rankings, and "best of" lists

Where we rank attractions in a category or a "best of" list, the order reflects an editor's judgement based on the criteria stated on that page, for example "best for toddlers" or "best rainy day options". Rankings are not for sale.

Where a page shows aggregated review scores, those come from the named source on the page and we do not edit individual reviews.

Independence and disclosures

We list attractions on their merits. Where a listing is sponsored, or where we earn an affiliate commission if you buy tickets through a link, we label it clearly on the page. Sponsorship never buys a positive review or a higher ranking in our listings, and editors are not told who advertises with us when they assign or review a page.

Corrections and updates

If we get something wrong, we want to fix it quickly. When we make a material change to a page, we update the "Last reviewed" date. Significant corrections, the kind that change the meaning of a fact a parent would rely on, are noted at the bottom of the affected page.

To flag an issue, email us with the page URL and a short note. We aim to acknowledge corrections within two working days.
