How the Georgia school calendar works
Georgia has the most generous break structure of any state on this site. The metro Atlanta districts balance an early August start against a fall break, a February break and a spring break, so the year is broken into shorter stretches than almost anywhere else.
Cobb County, Atlanta Public Schools, DeKalb County and Fulton County all return on August 3, 2026, with Gwinnett County following on August 5. Cobb finishes earliest on May 19, 2027, Gwinnett on May 26, and Atlanta, DeKalb and Fulton on May 27.
When the breaks fall in 2026-27
Fall break is where the districts diverge most. Cobb County and Fulton County take theirs early, September 21 to 25, 2026. DeKalb County runs October 5 to 12, and Gwinnett County and Atlanta Public Schools both take October 12 to 16. There are effectively three separate fall break weeks in metro Atlanta.
Thanksgiving is the one full-week closure everyone shares, November 23 to 27, 2026, though DeKalb notes that November 23 and 24 are designated inclement weather days and could become school days if the winter demands it.
The December closure starts on December 21, 2026 in all five districts. Gwinnett and Cobb return after January 1, 2027, and Atlanta, DeKalb and Fulton run to January 4. Atlanta Public Schools calls this the December Break, not the winter break, which matters when you are reading its calendar.
That is because Atlanta, like Cobb, DeKalb and Fulton, reserves the term winter break for a full week in February. Atlanta, DeKalb, Fulton and Cobb all close February 15 to 19, 2027, and Gwinnett takes its February break a few days earlier, from February 12 to 16.
Spring break is the most unified week in the Georgia year: all five districts close from April 5 to 9, 2027.
What it means for planning
Two weeks dominate. Mid-February is when the whole of metro Atlanta is off at once and indoor attractions are at their fullest, and the first full week of April repeats that outdoors. Book both early.
The compensation is the fall. Because Cobb and Fulton break in September while Gwinnett, Atlanta and DeKalb break in October, there is a five week stretch where you can almost always find a week when your district is off and the neighboring ones are not. Late September in particular is a good time to be at Atlanta attractions if you are a Cobb or Fulton family.
This page covers Gwinnett County Public Schools, Cobb County School District, Atlanta Public Schools, DeKalb County School District and Fulton County Schools.
