How the Arizona school calendar works
Arizona has the earliest school year in the country. The summer heat pushes districts to start in July or the first week of August and finish in May, and several run modified year-round calendars that swap the long summer for longer breaks spread through the year.
Chandler Unified is the clearest example. It returns on July 15, 2026 and finishes on May 20, 2027, using two-week intersessions instead of the usual short breaks. Mesa Public Schools and Tucson Unified both start on August 6, 2026, with Mesa finishing on May 27 and Tucson on May 25.
When the breaks fall in 2026-27
Fall break is a proper holiday in Arizona rather than a long weekend, and no two districts here take it at the same time. Chandler's first intersession runs a full fortnight, September 21 to October 2, 2026. Mesa takes October 5 to 9, and Tucson takes October 12 to 16. That is four consecutive weeks in which some part of the state is on holiday and the rest is at school.
Thanksgiving is short and identical: November 25 to 27, 2026 in all three districts, the Wednesday to Friday only.
Winter break starts on December 21, 2026 in Chandler and Tucson, and three days earlier on December 18 in Mesa. All three return in the first week of January 2027, with Mesa back on January 5 after professional learning days.
Spring break follows the same staggered pattern as the fall. Mesa takes March 8 to 12, 2027, Chandler runs a two-week intersession from March 8 to 19, and Tucson waits until March 22 to 26.
Tucson also closes for the Rodeo Break on February 25 and 26, 2027, tied to the Tucson Rodeo Parade. No other district in the state does this, and it is a genuine mid-winter window for Tucson families.
What it means for planning
The staggering is the point. Because Mesa, Chandler and Tucson are almost never off in the same week outside Thanksgiving, Arizona attractions rarely see a single overwhelming peak. If you are choosing between two weeks in October or March, pick the one your neighboring districts are not taking.
The early start also means that by the first week of August, when much of the country is still on summer holiday, Arizona kids are back in class and local attractions quieten down sharply on weekdays.
This page covers Mesa Public Schools, Chandler Unified School District and Tucson Unified School District. Individual schools within Mesa and Chandler can vary, and Chandler's year-round tracks differ from the dates shown.
