How the North Carolina school calendar works
North Carolina is one of the few states that legislates the school calendar directly. State law holds traditional-calendar districts to an opening date no earlier than the Monday closest to August 26 and a closing date no later than the Friday closest to June 11, which is why the three districts on this page cluster so tightly. Wake County Public School System and Guilford County Schools both start on August 24, 2026 and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools on August 25.
The finishes are just as close: Wake County and Charlotte-Mecklenburg on June 9, 2027 and Guilford County on June 10. That gives North Carolina one of the tightest statewide term structures in the country, and it means the summer window is effectively identical wherever in the state you live.
The complication is that the calendar law only binds traditional-calendar schools. Wake County also runs year-round, modified and single-track calendars whose dates look nothing like the ones on this page, and a Raleigh family with children at two different schools can genuinely be juggling two different sets of holidays.
When the breaks fall in 2026-27
Thanksgiving is a three-day close in all three districts, November 25 to 27, 2026. North Carolina does not take the full week, so the Monday and Tuesday remain school days.
Winter break is uniform: December 21, 2026 to January 1, 2027 everywhere on this page. Guilford County is the one difference at the far end, with students not returning until January 5, 2027.
Spring break is the only genuine variation. Guilford County goes first, March 22 to 26, 2027. Charlotte-Mecklenburg takes a longer nine-day break from March 25 to April 2, built around Good Friday and the adjoining teacher workdays. Wake County takes March 29 to April 2, with students also off on March 26 and April 5, which in practice turns it into a two-week stretch either side of Easter weekend.
There are no fall breaks in North Carolina. Charlotte-Mecklenburg does close for teacher workdays on November 2 and 3, 2026, which is the closest thing to an autumn long weekend the state offers.
What it means for planning
Because start and finish dates are legislated, the pressure points here are predictable. The week either side of Easter 2027 is the single busiest window in the state, with Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Wake County overlapping from March 29 to April 2 and Guilford County only just back. The Outer Banks and the mountain towns feel that overlap sharply.
The quiet window is October. No district on this page has a fall break, so mid-October in the Blue Ridge is one of the better times of year to travel with school-age children if you can take the days.
Hurricane season is the standing caveat. Coastal and eastern closures in September and October are absorbed differently by each district, so treat the June finish as provisional in a bad storm year.
