Thanksgiving break explained

Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday November 26. Every public school in the country is closed that day and the Friday after it. What varies, and it varies enormously, is how many of the preceding days a district also takes.

The shortest version is two days. New York City Public Schools, Yonkers, Brentwood, Boston Public Schools, Seattle Public Schools, Los Angeles Unified, Pittsburgh Public Schools, Montgomery County in Maryland, Newark and Paterson all close only on November 26 and 27, 2026. In those districts the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Thanksgiving week are ordinary school days.

The middle version, three days from Wednesday, is the most common pattern in the country. It covers most of North Carolina, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Virginia, Pennsylvania and much of Washington and New York State.

The full week belongs mostly to the South and the Mountain West. Every Texas district on this site closes from November 23 to 27, 2026, as do Denver, Jeffco and Douglas County in Colorado, all three Alabama systems, all three Louisiana parishes, Memphis-Shelby and Metro Nashville in Tennessee, Charleston and Horry County in South Carolina, and every Florida district. Some go further: Reading School District in Pennsylvania closes November 23 to 30, Allentown November 25 to 30, and Madison, Wisconsin November 25 to 30.

Several districts do not label the week Thanksgiving at all. Charleston County in South Carolina calls it fall break, Madison Metropolitan School District in Wisconsin calls it fall break, Green Bay calls it fall recess, Hillsborough County in Florida labels it Fall Break (Thanksgiving) and Austin ISD in Texas uses the fall break label too.

This is not a naming quirk. Those districts have consolidated what would otherwise be an October break into Thanksgiving week, which means that if you are looking for an autumn holiday in Charleston, Madison, Green Bay, Tampa or Austin, late November is the only one you get.

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after it are consistently the two busiest travel days of the American year, at airports and on the interstates alike. That is true regardless of your district, because the adult holiday is fixed even where the school holiday is not.

The knock-on for families in two-day districts is significant. If your children are in school on the Wednesday, you are flying on the worst day of the year with everybody else. Families in full-week districts can travel on the Saturday or Sunday before, which is dramatically calmer and usually cheaper.

Attraction traffic follows a different curve from travel traffic. Thanksgiving Day itself is the quietest day of the week almost everywhere, and many museums and smaller attractions close entirely. The Friday and Saturday after are the busiest, with theme parks in Florida and California running at holiday capacity and Christmas seasons opening at most major parks.

If you are in a full-week district, use the Monday and Tuesday. Zoos, science centers and city museums are close to empty on those two days because most of the country is still at school and work, and hotel rates in the big metros have not yet moved.

If you are in a two-day district, treat it as a long weekend rather than a trip. Anything requiring a flight on the Wednesday is worse value than the same trip in the first week of December.

Watch the weather clauses on the coast. Charleston County designates November 23 and 24, 2026 as hurricane make-up days, which means the first two days of its Thanksgiving week can be reclaimed as school days after a bad storm season. Reading School District in Pennsylvania lists November 23 to 25 and 30 as potential snow make-up dates. In both cases the break shrinks rather than the year extending.

Finally, check for adjoining teacher days. Charlotte-Mecklenburg closes November 2 and 3, Montgomery County and all three Northern Virginia districts close the same two days, and Greenville County in South Carolina closes November 2 and 3 as well. In much of the East that early-November pair is a better travel window than Thanksgiving itself.
