Florida school holidays

Florida runs schools at county level, so there are 67 district calendars rather than hundreds of local ones. That makes Florida unusually easy to plan around: if you know the county, you know the dates for every public school in it.

The five counties on this page cover most of the state's population. Broward, Hillsborough and Palm Beach all start on August 10, 2026, Orange County on August 11 and Miami-Dade on August 13. The finishes are further apart. Orange County closes on May 26, 2027, Palm Beach on May 27, Broward and Hillsborough on May 28, and Miami-Dade keeps going until June 3, a full week behind Orlando.

Thanksgiving is uniform. All five counties close for the full week of November 23 to 27, 2026, and Hillsborough formally calls it its fall break, because it is the only autumn closure Tampa families get.

Winter break begins December 21, 2026 statewide. Broward returns first on January 4, 2027 after a break ending January 1. Miami-Dade runs to January 3, and Hillsborough, Orange and Palm Beach run to January 4. The variation is a day or two rather than a week, so a Christmas trip works whichever county you are in.

Spring break is the real split. Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach take March 22 to 26, 2027, and Hillsborough extends its version to March 29. Orange County breaks a week earlier, March 15 to 19. Given Orange County is Orlando, that one week gap shapes the crowd pattern at the theme parks for the whole month.

No large Florida county on this page takes an October fall break, which sets the state apart from Georgia and Alabama next door.

If you are traveling to Orlando, the week of March 15 is the local school break and the parks fill with Central Florida families as well as visitors. The following week brings South Florida down instead. Neither week is quiet, but mid-March at the coast and late March inland are noticeably different in feel.

Miami-Dade's later finish is the other planning quirk. Late May is a genuine window in Miami when most of the country is still at school and the county has not yet broken up, and the reverse holds in the first days of June.
