Winter break explained

Winter break is the most synchronized holiday in the American school calendar, but the edges still move by up to a week. Most of the country starts on Monday December 21, 2026. That covers every Texas district, all of Florida, Colorado, Michigan, most of Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana, South Carolina, California and Georgia.

The Northeast starts later and shorter. New York City, Buffalo, Yonkers and Brentwood begin on December 24, 2026, as do Boston, Worcester, Newark, Paterson, Pittsburgh, Central Bucks, Baltimore County and Montgomery County in Maryland. Rochester, Philadelphia, Reading and Saint Paul begin on December 23.

A few start earlier. Indianapolis Public Schools begins on December 18, 2026, the earliest date on this site, which gives Indianapolis families a genuine seventeen-day break.

January 1, 2027 is a Friday, which makes the return date the single most variable part of this holiday and the detail most likely to wreck a booking.

Some districts return on Monday January 4. Others hold a teacher day and return on the Tuesday: Metro Nashville has a professional development day on January 4, Greenville County, Charleston County, Guilford County, Douglas County in Colorado, Denver, Mobile County and Knox County all bring students back on January 5. Jefferson County in Alabama and Caddo Parish, East Baton Rouge and Jefferson Parish in Louisiana return on January 6. Jeffco in Colorado does not return until January 6 and Baldwin County in Alabama not until January 7.

Two districts go much further. Los Angeles Unified and Fresno Unified do not return until January 11, 2027, a three-week winter break that is by some distance the longest in the country. Springfield, Massachusetts runs to January 5, Montgomery County and Baltimore County in Maryland to January 3, and Memphis-Shelby to January 4.

In much of the Northeast and the Pacific Northwest, winter break is only half the story, because those states take a second week in February. New York calls it mid-winter recess and every district on this site takes February 15 to 19, 2027. Massachusetts calls it February vacation and Boston, Worcester and Springfield all take the same week. Seattle and Spokane take mid-winter break that week, and Detroit and Utica in Michigan do too.

Elsewhere February is thin or absent. Tacoma takes only two days, Dearborn takes only Presidents' Day, Milwaukee takes a single day on February 22, Anoka-Hennepin takes two days, and Reading and Central Bucks in Pennsylvania take a Presidents' Day week. Texas, Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and most of Colorado take nothing at all.

The Gulf Coast substitutes Mardi Gras. Jefferson Parish in Louisiana closes February 5 to 12, 2027, East Baton Rouge February 8 to 10, and Mobile County and Baldwin County in Alabama February 8 to 12. Caddo Parish in northern Louisiana takes a Presidents' Day week instead and no carnival break at all.

The week from December 26 to January 1 is the most expensive family travel week of the year in the United States. Walt Disney World and Disneyland run at their highest attendance of the calendar, Florida and Southern California hotel rates roughly double, and flights into Orlando, Fort Lauderdale and Southern California are booked out months ahead.

The gap week is the opportunity. Because Los Angeles Unified and Fresno stay off until January 11 while almost everyone else is back, the first full week of January is quiet at Southern California attractions and priced accordingly. The same effect appears in Alabama and Louisiana in the first week of January, and in Indianapolis in the third week of December before the national rush starts.

For skiing, the pressure point is not Christmas but February. Because New York, Massachusetts, Michigan and Washington all take their mid-winter weeks in the same February 15 to 19 window, the Adirondacks, the Berkshires, northern Michigan and the Cascades all peak simultaneously. Colorado escapes that, because no Denver-area district breaks in February at all.
