Fall break explained
A short break in October that some districts take, especially in Texas and parts of the Midwest. Not every district has one, but where they do it is a great chance for a shorter trip.
The break that only some states take
Fall break is the least standardized holiday in the American school year, and for a large minority of families it does not exist at all. Whether your district takes one depends almost entirely on how early it started in August: districts that go back in the first fortnight of August build an October break to relieve a long first semester, and districts that start after Labor Day have no need for one.
Tennessee, Indiana, Colorado outside Denver, Louisiana, coastal Alabama and Spokane in Washington all take a proper October break. Minnesota takes its own version. Texas takes it in some districts and not others. North Carolina, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Georgia and Florida take none at all, and Denver Public Schools, Houston ISD, Austin ISD and Prince George's County in Maryland explicitly go without.
Where and when it falls in 2026
Tennessee has the most substantial fall break in the country. Knox County closes October 5 to 9, 2026, Metro Nashville October 12 to 16 with an additional professional development day on October 9, and Memphis-Shelby the longest of all at October 12 to 19.
Indiana is close behind and staggered across three weeks: Indianapolis Public Schools October 12 to 16, Fort Wayne October 16 to 19 and Hamilton Southeastern October 19 to 23.
Colorado splits sharply. Douglas County takes a full week, October 12 to 16, Jeffco takes two days on October 12 and 13, and Denver takes nothing.
In Texas, Northside ISD in San Antonio closes October 9 to 13, Cypress-Fairbanks October 12 to 16 and Dallas ISD takes two days on October 8 and 9. Houston and Austin have no fall break.
Louisiana takes an early one: Caddo Parish October 5 to 9, Jefferson Parish October 9 to 12 and East Baton Rouge just October 12 and 13. On the Alabama coast, Mobile County takes October 12 and 13 and Baldwin County October 12 to 14, while Jefferson County in Birmingham takes none.
Minnesota's MEA break is its own institution, timed to the Education Minnesota conference: October 15 and 16, 2026 for Anoka-Hennepin and Minneapolis. Spokane, on its balanced calendar, takes October 19 to 23. Milwaukee takes a single day on October 26. Philadelphia closes October 9 to 12, and Loudoun County in Virginia October 29 and 30. Horry County in South Carolina takes a two-day October break on the 12th and 13th.
Why it is the best-value break of the year
Fall break is the cheapest school holiday in the American calendar and it is not close. Because only a minority of districts take one and those that do take it in different weeks, no destination in the country experiences a national surge in October.
Airfares in mid-October sit at their lowest point between summer and Thanksgiving. Hotel rates in Orlando, the Smoky Mountains and the Gulf Coast are in shoulder season. Theme park attendance in Florida during the second and third weeks of October is well below both the summer and the Christmas peaks, even with Halloween events running.
The weather argument is just as strong. Mid-October is the best time of the year to be outdoors in most of the southern half of the country, and it is peak color in the Smokies, the Blue Ridge, Brown County in Indiana, the Upper Peninsula and northern Minnesota.
What to do if your district does not have one
A large share of families have no October break at all, and in those states the equivalent opportunity is usually the early-November teacher day cluster. Charlotte-Mecklenburg closes November 2 and 3, 2026, as do Greenville County in South Carolina, Montgomery County in Maryland and all three Northern Virginia districts. New Jersey closes November 5 and 6 for the NJEA convention. Loudoun stacks October 29 and 30 onto November 2 and 3 for a five-day run.
Those windows behave exactly like a fall break: off-season pricing, mild weather and almost nobody else travelling. The NJEA break in particular is the quietest good-value window on the Northeastern calendar, with the single exception of Atlantic City, where the convention itself is held.
If your district takes neither, October remains the best month to take a Friday or a Monday as an authorized absence. Attendance policies vary, so ask the school rather than assuming, but the trade between a single missed day in October and a full-price week in July is a favorable one.
Quick tips
Tip 1
Travel is often cheaper than during summer or winter breaks.
Tip 2
Not every district has a fall break, always double check yours.
Tip 3
Great time for a short getaway, national parks and mild-weather destinations shine.
What to do with the time
Once you have the dates, the harder part is filling them. Nature and outdoor days out and National and state parks tend to be the best fit for fall break, and both round up places families rate across the states we cover.
