How the New York school calendar works
New York schedules are built around recesses rather than breaks, and the pattern is more consistent than in most states. Districts start after Labor Day, run to late June, and all take a February mid-winter recess that other states simply do not have.
New York City Public Schools starts latest, on September 10, 2026, and finishes last, on June 28, 2027. Buffalo and Yonkers both return on September 3, Rochester on September 8 and Brentwood on Long Island on September 9. The finishes cluster tightly, from Buffalo and Rochester on June 24, 2027 to New York City on June 28.
When the breaks fall in 2026-27
Thanksgiving recess is two or three days rather than a week. New York City, Yonkers and Brentwood close on November 26 and 27, 2026. Buffalo and Rochester add the Wednesday, from November 25.
Winter recess is short by national standards and starts late. New York City, Buffalo, Yonkers and Brentwood all begin on December 24, 2026 and return after January 1, 2027, with Rochester starting a day earlier on December 23. There is no long two-week wind-down here: schools are open right up to Christmas Eve.
Mid-winter recess is the exception that unites the state. All five districts close for exactly the same week, February 15 to 19, 2027. Nothing else in the New York calendar lines up this precisely, and it is the single most competitive week of the year for family bookings in the city.
Spring recess is the opposite. New York City takes April 22 to 30, 2027, its longest break of the year. Buffalo takes March 26 to April 2, Yonkers and Rochester take March 22 to 26, and Brentwood splits the difference with an Easter recess from March 26 to 29 and a separate spring recess from April 19 to 23.
What it means for planning
Mid-winter recess week in February should be booked early for anything indoors in Manhattan, because the whole state is off at once and the weather pushes everyone into the same museums. Late March is the quiet counterpart in the city, since the upstate districts are on spring recess while New York City schools are still in session.
New York City's late June finish is the other thing to watch. Anywhere else in the country the summer season has been running for two weeks by the time city schools break up, so late June in New York is unusually calm and late July is not.
This page covers New York City Public Schools, Buffalo Public Schools, Yonkers Public Schools, Rochester City School District and Brentwood UFSD on Long Island.
Plan the days off
Every New York district on this page takes the same February mid-winter recess, which is the busiest family week of the year here. Things to do with kids in New York rounds up the attractions families rate most, from theme parks to free afternoons in the park.
