South Carolina school holidays

South Carolina districts set their own calendars against a state 180-day requirement, and the coastal ones behave differently from the upstate ones. Greenville County Schools and Charleston County School District both start on August 11, 2026 and finish on May 27, 2027. Horry County Schools, which covers Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand, starts eight days later on August 19 and does not finish until June 8, almost a fortnight behind the rest.

That is not an accident. Horry County's economy runs on the summer season, and a later start and later finish keeps the school year clear of the busiest weeks on the beach.

Thanksgiving is generous here. Charleston and Horry County both close for the full week, November 23 to 27, 2026, and Charleston formally calls that week its fall break. Greenville takes only November 25 to 27, so upstate families have two more school days than the coast.

Only Horry County takes an autumn break proper, and it is short: October 12 and 13, 2026. Horry also has a January break on the 18th and 19th, which is the only mid-winter closure of any length in the state.

Winter break starts on December 21, 2026 everywhere. Charleston and Horry run to January 1, 2027, and Greenville to January 4. Greenville and Charleston students both return on January 5.

Spring break is spread across three separate weeks. Greenville goes first, March 22 to 26, 2027. Charleston follows immediately with March 29 to April 2. Horry County waits until April 12 to 16, more than three weeks after Greenville.

Greenville also closes on November 2 and 3, 2026, giving upstate families a five-day weekend in early November that nowhere else in the state gets.

The three-week spread on spring break is the single most useful thing about the South Carolina calendar. Myrtle Beach in late March is busy with Greenville and Charleston families and comparatively empty of local children, while mid-April flips it. If you are traveling from outside the state, the last week of March is the better bet for the Grand Strand.

Hurricane season shapes the coastal calendars in a way it does not upstate. Charleston designates November 23 and 24, 2026 as weather make-up days, which means that in a storm year the first two days of its Thanksgiving week can be reclaimed as school days. Do not book Monday and Tuesday travel around Charleston Thanksgiving without checking.
