Michigan school holidays

Michigan law nudges districts toward a post-Labor Day start, but waivers are widely used and all three districts on this page start in August. Detroit Public Schools Community District and Dearborn Public Schools go back on August 24, 2026, with Detroit teachers reporting a week earlier on August 17, and Utica Community Schools in Macomb County follows on August 31.

The finishes are spread over eight days: Detroit on June 7, 2027, Dearborn on June 10 with June 11 held in reserve, and Utica on June 15. Detroit pre-schedules make-up days from June 9 to 18, so a heavy snow year pushes its finish close to Utica's.

Thanksgiving is three days everywhere: November 25 to 27, 2026 in all three districts. There is no fall break anywhere on this page, which is one of the reasons Michigan's autumn color season is comparatively easy to travel in.

Winter break is identical too, December 21, 2026 to January 1, 2027 in Detroit, Utica and Dearborn.

Mid-winter break is the first real split. Detroit and Utica both close for the full week of February 15 to 19, 2027. Dearborn does not: it takes Presidents' Day, February 15, as a single day and nothing more. Families with children in schools either side of the Dearborn boundary end up with a week and a day off in the same household.

Spring break is the most synchronized week in Michigan. Detroit, Utica and Dearborn all take March 26 to April 2, 2027, built around Good Friday on March 26 and Easter on March 28.

Dearborn's calendar carries two closures no other Michigan district on this page has: Eid al-Fitr on March 10 and 11, 2027, and Eid al-Adha from May 17 to 19. Those reflect Dearborn's large Arab American community and are fixed holidays in the district calendar rather than optional absences.

Because all three districts break together from March 26 to April 2, that week is the busiest of the Michigan year for indoor attractions, and it is also the classic week for Metro Detroit families to head south to Florida. Flights out of DTW that week are priced accordingly, so book in the autumn rather than the new year.

Mid-February is the more interesting opportunity. Detroit and Utica are off for the week while Dearborn is largely in school, and northern Michigan ski areas are busy but not overwhelmed.
